Honorable Prime Minister Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina’s government have set the goal of becoming the developed nation by 2041. To reach her vision, there have no other option to modernize the country’s $48 billion Garment & Textile sector as eco-industrial within 2041.
As you are aware of that near about 19,000 MW electricity needs to run the country’s around 5340 garments, knitting and textile factory where our total production is only 15,000 MW. The Power Division of Bangladesh government wants to save about 6,000 MW electricity to modernize the industry as compliance to compliance plus towards using Energy Efficiency Technology and services.
Is it Easy?
Bangladesh’s RMG & Textile sector, has taken the lead in environment-friendly, “green” manufacturing as it has established 67 eco-friendly green buildings, the highest number in the world. Aiming to cut back on carbon emission, the green factories in Bangladesh have been set up with eco-friendly technology and are using energy-saving machinery, harvesting rainwater, and using solar panels and servo motor for power generation.
To encourage all industries to establish eco-friendly factories, the Bangladesh government is providing loans at 4% interest, funded by JICA, ADB & World Bank, especially to the RMG sector. According to Bangladesh Bank, in the 2016-17 fiscal year, banks and other financial institutions disbursed $ 45 billion of $ 51 billion in loans to the RMG & Textile sector. The government also considering the duty-free import of green garment materials to those who are investing in the establishment of eco-friendly factories.
But, Factory owners are not willing to interest becoming compliance plus now. Rather, Green garment factory owners, who have spent billions of dollars for setting up the units, are left frustrated as the international retailers are not rewarding them with higher prices for the initiative. Rather they have to pay 12% bank interest on around BDT 150-200 core to renovating them as compliance to compliance Plus. Time is thinking to provide them special privilege.
